Since
the beginning of the Sanctuary's life and the finding of the
Madonna's Image there have been miracles and supernatural happenings,
throughout all its thousand years of history, until our time,
the Sanctuary has witnessed many prodigious events.
On the large wooden door (1833) which gives entry into the Basilica
are carved twelve squares, they tell the story of the finding
of the painting and show the initial miracles obtained with
the Madonna's help.
In one of the squares a scene shows a young mother, kneeling
with her arms outstretched towards the Icon, imploring Maria.
Her son had died and she asked that the body was brought into
the temple instead of the cemetery.
Her plea was granted and whilst her son was in the temple he
came back to life.
Other squares remember the healing of a young blind boy, a lame
person that regained use of his legs and the healing of an obsessed.
In St. Basilio's Chapel, the Basilian Monks placed a large painting
by Giacinto Diano. The painting shows Enrico III, the Emperor
of Germany, entering with great pomp into the temple where the
priest offers him the Holy Water.
The story tells that the Emperor suffered from a particularly
embarrassing illness, probably leprosy, and that when he came
into contact with the Holy Water was healed.
After he was healed the Emperor conceded to the Sanctuary many
privileges and numerous donations.
In some display cases, conserved in the Basilica are kept some
ex-votes made of precious metals, other valuable gifts are conserved
in the convent.
All the donations are thanks to the Madonna of Materdomini for
the protection experienced, the grace and favours given and
the miracles obtained through her help.
